Doorbell… For the Love of God. Don’t Answer It by C. W. Fisher is not a “nice book”, or more precisely, the contents of the book are not nice. But I had to finish it if only to be honest with my review. Let me first say that this was an unhappy book for me – a takeover of an elderly home (Bettina and her bedridden husband, Quentin by two drifters Wynn and Loretta, initiated by seeking a jump start, then not so gradually ensconcing themselves in the home and abusing the resources of the elderly couple. I was surprised at how easily that was accomplished. I cannot understand that with a sick husband, one would open one’s doors to strangers, and give access to garage, house, and car. Bettina had family issues besides her husband. Her two sons leeched on her for money, and she was accustomed to help them. The younger, David, had been a drug addict and alcoholic; the elder, Michael,, was an engineer with money and family problems. They merely demanded that she send an amount to their account to which she invariably acquiesced.
The details of the story are much more disturbing and raise troubling issues as to how humans can behave towards others, especially elderly ones with no strength or ‘backbone’ to fight back. Bettina refuses to call the police because she fears a backlash from the two when they get out of jail. So she yields all she has. When she eventually tells her alcoholic son, he, aware that he has constantly ‘screwed up’ in the past, dashes boldly to save her and they both end up gagged and bound in the cellar. He is the ultimate hero, but then in his exhilaration he does his final screw-up.
I cannot quarrel too much with the characters since I see in the story and in the strength of their roles a message which the author may have intended. Take the title: “ Doorbell; For the Love of God. Don’t Answer It”. This is a screeching message that bad things could result. There is no information whether the strangers had prior information about the inhabitants of the house. The mere opening of the door provided access, and imposing their will for them a gold mine. I can virtually see footnotes to the title: ‘put a peephole on your door – no identify, no access’, period!
The contents of this book were repugnant to this reader – not only the main act but the details of capturing an elderly being under one’s will. There is also quite a lot of obscene language used by the strangers, and that too signified the serious nature of the message. The book is not otherwise difficult to read; it is in fact quite well written, thrilling and with many twists and turns, some of which just seem to fizzle out. And this reader was automatically driven to find out ’what next’; will she get out of this? Consequently, I saw the book as strong advice to elders (or anyone, including myself) as to what can result. You can be too kind to others, but too unkind to yourself and yours. And frankly, the characters play their parts very well. I am glad I read this offensive book. And recommend that all with unprotected homes should read it too, and let it put them on the offensive.
Incidentally, the author does not tell us whether Wynn and Loretta were sent to jail. Somewhat saddening……

Doorbell For the Love of God Don't Answer It eBook CW Fisher Reviews

After 32 years writing freelance, the author, CW Fisher, learned that telling stories was the only thing that made him happy. For him, it’s a reflex. He describes the events in the action-packed thriller that could be adapted for a screenplay. The narratives are so visual and full of imagination. He has written 21 novels which are in various stages of the editorial process. He is publishing these titles one by one, steadily and surely.

This book was published in 2017 and the author says

"I am old now, with a lifetime of experiences that I am converting to fiction just as fast as I can type, knowing I’m approaching the finish line. I want to go out read. I want to share my stories with the world, stories of good people—many doing bad things—who each struggle to get through their days successfully. It’s a struggle for all of us, no matter who we are. But our stories bind us together. Our stories make us human. Our stories are all we leave behind in the end. Our stories need to be told."

Title

Doorbell For the Love of God, Don’t Answer It.

Doorbell is an gripping account of the unbellished and blemishes life brings in the aging process. CW Fisher presents his debut thriller Doorbell. Two master manipulators enter the lives of a vulnerable older woman, Bettina Moore, and her bed-ridden husband Quentin.

One day in October of 2016, right before the historic Presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton—a time when all America was holding its breath—Bettina’s doorbell rings, and her life is suddenly and irrevocably altered forever.

Bettina does not really want to know what happens anymore. She knows the election’s in a few days. But she is tired of giving it oxygen.

"That’s my oxygen, and I’m taking it back. Whoever wins, Trump or Clinton, I’m pretty sure it will all go to hell, so why watch? I give up. I’ve got more important things to do. My husband is dying. I want to live alongside him as long as possible and as happily as possible. I already know how I’m going to vote, but that won’t be the end of our troubles. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer, and that’s just the way it will go.”
Two drifters, Wynn Goldman and Loretta Cooper, need a jump, and Bettina reluctantly says yes. They also need to use her toilet, and could she possibly give them a ride to the auto parts store?

Bettina has met the ultimate persuader in Wynn, who doesn’t take no for an answer, who convinces her that she needs him to do jobs around the house, like mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, painting the house. And thus it begins.

Overwhelmed and desperate to reclaim her home, Bettina calls her son Michael who lives in Indianapolis. But he’s too preoccupied with his own problems to listen. She reaches out to her son David, a chronic alcoholic who is failing to stay sober, but David hits her up for money.

Bettina says about David

“I mean, sorry he’s gone, but Jesus Christ he wore you out. Drugs. Booze. Stealing from you. "
When David realized that the two lowlifes have invaded his parents’ home and he springs into action, bursting through the door to rescue them. The result is like a toaster in a bathtub.

Doorbell is the kind of thriller that makes you scream at the characters who just keep bumbling along, victims of their own defects. It’s about victimizers who prey on the weak, and how the weak can find triumph in faith and courage.

Very well written by a talented and experienced writer. He picks the reality of passing life, grief, poverty and pain and ridicules about it in sometimes shocking ways with creepy comments, fatalistic thoughts, but with hope prevailing.
At the end, Bettina was alive and free. She was almost seventy years old. And she had started over. There is hope.

Doorbell For the Love of God, Don't Answer It by CW Fisher is a horror thriller in both senses of the words. Wynn and Loretta are drifters who have been making their way across the country and the turbulent election of 2016 ran its course. They stop when their car needs a jump and they approach the home of an elderly couple. They ring the doorbell and Bettina answers the door. Bettina is an old woman who no longer holds the strength or the resolve to fight off the threats around her. Wynn is persuasive and not only convinces her of the need for the jump but also that she needs him to move in and start doing things around the house. Bettina's husband is bedridden and can do nothing to help her. Not too long after the doorbell rings, Wynn and Loretta have forced their way into the house and are using credit cards and eating food. They mistreat everyone and everything in their path and they refuse to stop or leave. That is when Bettina makes a desperate call to her son for help. David, Bettina's son, is a recovering alcoholic who is struggling with the recovery phase. Without much forward thinking, David comes through the door ready for a fight, and it is a fight that he gets.
There are many different aspects of this book that I don't like. I didn't like most of the characters or the way they handled the situations they were in. I felt that at times the narrative was much harsher and more brutal than it needed to be. However, this is such a simple concept that I can't help but like the idea as a whole. Just like in the movie "Strangers" when the villain is asked why they are doing this and she replies simply with, "because you were home," this could happen to anyone at any time. That is the part that both makes me smile and cringe.
